Industry-wide Environmental Products Declaration (EPD) and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) Data for Cold-Formed Steel Framing

The latest SFIA Industry-Wide Environmental Product Declaration for Cold-Formed Steel (CFS) Framing is available for download. It provides "cradle to gate" listing of energy inputs and environmental impacts based on one metric ton of industry-averaged cold-formed steel framing products, and is valid through August 13, 2031.

“The Cold-formed Steel Framing EPD is another tool for the industry to use not only for meeting environmental building standards, but as another example of the sustainability of steel,” according to SFIA executive director Don Allen. “It builds on other well-known sustainability attributes such as recycled content, infinite recyclability, and durability of cold-formed steel framing members.”

Issued Aug. 13, 2026, the UL-certified EPD is an industry-average, Type III environmental product declaration. It covers structural and nonstructural CFS framing products used in interior and exterior walls, roofs, floors and ceilings. The EPD covers CFS framing products manufactured from hot-dip galvanized cold-rolled steel coil. Products include studs, joists, rafters, truss components, channels, furring, angles and headers that meet the requirements of AISI S220 and AISI S240.
