SFIA's Role

SFIA is an accredited American National Standards Institute (ANSI) developer. The process is governed by the ANSI Essential Requirements and is open and balanced to assure due process for the development of standards. These requirements apply to activities related to the development of consensus for approval, revision, reaffirmation, and withdrawal of American National Standards

Due process means that any person (organization, company, government agency, individual, etc.) with a direct and material interest has a right to participate by: a) expressing a position and its basis, b) having that position considered, and c) having the right to appeal. Due process allows for equity and fair play. The ANSI Essential Requirements constitute the minimum acceptable due process requirements for the development of consensus.

The Operating Procedures guide describes SFIA’s procedures for developing and maintaining American National Standards. When these Operating Procedures are silent on an issue, the ANSI Essential Requirements serves as the precedent document. The SFIA uses the Canvass Process as described in its Operating Procedures for developing and maintaining American National Standards.

ANSI/SFIA Standards

As of July 2, 2024, the Steel Framing Industry Association (SFIA) became an accredited ANSI Standards Development Organization (SDO) and will be responsible for the development of a portion of the standards related to the cold-formed steel industry that were previously maintained by AISI.
The following is a list of all the standards that are currently on the roster for SFIA:
  • SFIA AISI S202: Code of Standard Practice for Cold-formed Steel Structural Framing
  • SFIA AISI S220: North American Standard for Cold-Formed Steel Nonstructural Framing
  • SFIA AISI S230: Standard for CFS Framing — Prescriptive Method for One- and Two-Family Dwellings
  • SFIA AISI S240: North American Standard for Cold-Formed Steel Structural Framing
  • SFIA AISI S250: North American Standard for Thermal Transmittance of Building Envelopes with CFS Framing
  • SFIA AISI S400: North American Standard for Seismic Design of Cold-Formed Structural Systems
  • SFIA AISI S909: Test Standard for Determining the Web Crippling Strength of Cold-Formed Steel Flexural Members
  • SFIA AISI S910: Test Standard for Determining the Distortional Buckling Strength of Cold-Formed Hat-Shaped Compression Members
  • SFIA AISI S911: Test Standard for Determining the Flexural Strength of Cold-Formed Steel Hat-Shaped Members
  • SFIA AISI S913: Test Standard for Determining the Strength and Deformation Behavior of Hold-Downs Attached to Cold-Formed Steel Structural Framing
  • SFIA AISI S914: Test Standard for Determining the Strength and Deformation Behavior of Joist Connectors Attached to Cold-Formed Steel Structural Framing
  • SFIA AISI S915: Test Standard for Determining the Strength and Deformation Behavior of Through-the-Web Punchout Cold-Formed Steel Wall Stud Bridging Connectors
  • SFIA AISI S916: Test Standard for Determining the Strength and Stiffness of Cold-Formed Steel-Framed Nonstructural Interior Partition Walls Sheathed with Gypsum Board
  • SFIA AISI S917: Test Standard for Determining the Fastener-Sheathing Local Translational Stiffness of Sheathed Cold-Formed Steel Assemblies
  • SFIA AISI S918: Test Standard for Determining the Fastener-Sheathing Rotational Stiffness of Sheathed Cold-Formed Steel Assemblies
  • SFIA AISI S919: Test Standard for Determining the Flexural Strength and Stiffness of Cold-Formed Steel Nonstructural Members
  • SFIA AISI S920: Test Standard for Screw Penetration through gypsum board into non-structural steel framing members
  • SFIA AISI S921: Test Standard for Determining the Strength and Serviceability of Cold-Formed Steel Truss Assemblies and Components
  • SFIA AISI S925: Test Standard for Determining the Flexural Strength and Stiffness of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members (New Standard, pending)

SFIA Standards Committee

The SFIA Standards Committee is a standing committee that approves the content of a standard and whose vote demonstrates evidence of consensus following their initiation, revision or reaffirmation by change proposal champions and task groups. Once proposed changes are approved by the SFIA Standards Committee, an assembled Canvass Group reviews the standard and votes. If the Canvass Group votes affirmatively, standards are then posted for public review.

Parties with an interest in participating in the task group and/or canvass process for the ANSI standards developed by the SFIA should click on the Cold-Formed Steel Framing Standards Development Expression of Interest Survey and contact the SFIA Standards Committee Administrator at the email below.
