Cold-Formed Steel and Sustainability - SFIA103 

This program will illustrate how cold-formed steel framing provides a design solution that is highly sustainable. Starting from raw materials and ending at end of service life, this course will trace the embodied energy of cold-formed steel framing. It will also reveal how the industry has effectively reduced, through technology advances and process change, its carbon footprint. Special emphasis will be made to underscore cold-formed steel’s recycled content, and how it has become more of regional material.

Learning Objectives:       

1. Participants will explore the process of manufacturing cold-formed steel framing profiles.

2. Participants will investigate how technology changes have drastically reduced energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

3. Participants will be able to explain how steel has become a building product choice with a high recycled content.

4. Participants will be able to describe how this high recycled content coupled with cold-formed steel’s transition to a regional material impacts a project’s LEED consideration.
